Oncology

A cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming and filled with uncertainty, fear, and countless decisions. During this deeply personal and challenging time, our Oncology Case Managers are here to walk beside you every step of the way.

Our case managers are more than coordinators—they are compassionate guides who help you make sense of your diagnosis, understand your treatment options, and feel supported throughout your journey. From your first appointment to survivorship or palliative care, they ensure you never have to face cancer alone.

Your oncology case manager can assist with:

  • Understanding your Oncology benefits
  • Authorisations to facilitate payment of claims
  • Support for members and their families
  • Care Co-ordination

Our Oncology Case Managers are here to bring clarity, comfort, and confidence to your cancer journey. With us by your side, you’ll have the support you need to move forward with strength and hope.

Registration on the Oncology programme requires confirmation of your diagnosis. The treating provider will submit a histology, pathology or radiology report that confirms the diagnosis.

RUMed’s preferred provider for Oncology care is the Independent Clinical Oncology Network (ICON) who provide clinical protocols and treatment guidelines to facilitate access to evidence based treatment for each condition.

To find an ICON provider please visit the website https://iconsa.co.za

You can contact the oncology team via email at [email protected] or call 0860103228 to speak to an Oncology case manager.

Prescribed Minimum Benefits

RUMed medical scheme operates under The Medical Schemes Act (No. 131 of 1998) which is the law that governs how medical aids operate in South Africa. It ensures:

  • All medical schemes are registered and regulated.
  • Members are protected from unfair treatment
  • Certain health services, like Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs), are guaranteed to all members
  • Council for Medical schemes is a statutory body that ensures Medical schemes follow the legislation.

PMBs are a set of basic healthcare services that every medical aid must cover, no matter what plan you’re on. These are required by law under the Medical Schemes Act.

PMBs cover:

  1. Emergency medical conditions – like accidents or sudden illnesses that could be life-threatening.
  2. 271 medical conditions – grouped into what’s called Diagnostic Treatment Pairs (DTPs).
  3. 26 chronic illnesses – such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, and high blood pressure

What This Means for You as a Member

  • You’re always covered for PMBs.
  • No co-payments if you use your scheme’s approved doctors or hospitals (called Designated Service Providers).
  • You must follow the rules – like getting pre-authorization, using approved medicine, treatment that is recognized as the prevailing level of care and registering for chronic care programs

When you need treatment for a condition that falls under PMBs:

  1. You submit a request to your medical aid (often through your doctor or hospital).
  2. The scheme checks if:
    • The condition is on the PMB list.
    • You followed the rules (e.g. used a Designated Service Provider).
    • The treatment is clinically appropriate and is available as the prevailing level of care for that condition in South Africa
  3. If approved, the scheme will pay for the treatment, with no co-payment (if you and your treating provider followed the rules).

If they refuse, they must give a valid reason, and you can appeal or complain.
